Last night, 11:30PM, we got a call from the Foster Agency asking if we could take in a 3yr old non-verbal little boy. He had been found wandering the streets.
When you get those emergency calls, most of the time they call it an "Emergency" placement. But they are really asking if you can commit to a permanent placement. Which means an undetermined amount of time.
After three years of fostering we are familiar with these types of things. During our last family council we decided, and committed, to only taking in infants. And will consider sibling sets with an infant and a sibling who's potty trained age, and up. So I had to tell the agency that we could only take this little boy for up to five days. They agreed to that.
These little ones who come during a crisis usually arrive within a few hours. So Leif and I climbed out of bed and started gathering what we would need. I also put in the traditional fresh baked cookies we always have on hand in case. They work wonders during this horrible transition these babies are going through.
Then we got another phone call. Expecting to set up drop off time. But instead they told me that they weren't placing him with us.🤦♀️😵💫😮💨😞 This type of thing actually happens probably as often as the placement usually follows through. But not usually with Emergency placements🤔
I feel a little unsettled about how it ended. I'm hoping they found a good family member. Or a permanent placement. But if they didn't, why did they decide not to place him with us? This will stew for the day. As I fight the urge to call them and check in. But I won't call. ... all that happens in these types of situations is how it's supposed to.
